Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Segun Sowunmi has cautioned that anyone who downplays the political strength of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will inevitably face the consequences, regardless of personal grievances.
Gossip News Now reports that Sowunmi’s remarks come amid the ongoing internal crisis within the PDP, which has split the party into two rival factions.
One camp, aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, while the opposing faction is headed by Umar Damagum.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, Sowunmi argued that the PDP is currently on a self-destructive path that could render it unelectable by the 2027 general elections.
He noted that both political heavyweights and many PDP members failed to recognise the seriousness of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition spearheaded by Atiku, despite his earlier warnings.
He said, “Preparing ourselves for any real chance of victory in the next election remains a major challenge.
“We have been badly weakened by the ADC, yet when they emerged, many dismissed them, asking who they were. But I cautioned everyone. I said Atiku Abubakar has the capacity to deliver a second major blow to the PDP. Regardless of your level of anger, if you underestimate him, you will pay for it.
“When you compare the ADC with the PDP today, it becomes clear that the PDP seems determined to make itself unelectable.”
