The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has denied rumours suggesting he has been chosen to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the 2027 presidential election.
During an interview on Channels Television, Yilwatda described the reports as untrue, stressing that the party has not made any move to remove Shettima from the current presidential ticket. He maintained that such speculations are baseless and unnecessary.
According to him, conversations about potential running mates are premature, as the APC will only address such matters after conducting its primary elections. Yilwatda alleged that most of the claims were being driven by political opponents attempting to create confusion within the ruling party.
He stated that there has been no internal discussion regarding replacing the vice president, adding that individuals spreading such rumours were simply creating controversy where none exists.
Addressing political tensions in Rivers State, Yilwatda also clarified his position regarding the rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former governor Nyesom Wike. He explained that the dispute does not fall under his responsibility as APC national chairman.
He noted that Wike remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Fubara belongs to the APC, making it inappropriate for him to intervene in their disagreement.
Speaking further on the political situation in Rivers State, Yilwatda stated that the impeachment discussions currently ongoing relate strictly to APC lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly. He emphasized that the matter is an internal party affair and can be handled through established party processes.
He added that the APC has structured mechanisms designed to address internal disagreements without public confrontation. According to him, sensitive party issues are better managed through internal dialogue and responsible leadership.
Yilwatda concluded by stressing the importance of maturity and confidentiality in resolving party disputes, while reiterating that Wike is not a concern within the APC structure.
