Biodun Ajiboye, a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, arguing that Nigeria’s ongoing economic and social difficulties result from systemic failures by successive governments.

During an interview with ARISE Television on Tuesday, Ajiboye dismissed claims that the Tinubu administration has worsened poverty, unemployment, and insecurity. He stressed that the nation’s current economic collapse is the outcome of years of fiscal mismanagement, including excessive money printing, oil forward-sales, and policy distortions inherited by the current government.

“A country as promising as Nigeria does not collapse overnight. Let us examine how successive governments led us here,” Ajiboye said.

He added, “By May 2023, over ₦30 trillion had been printed. Oil that was still underground was sold, and money was printed indiscriminately. What did we expect the aftermath to be?”

Ajiboye described the reforms implemented by the Tinubu administration as necessary to prevent total economic collapse.

“If these reforms had not been introduced, where would we be now? We were approaching a Sri Lanka-type crisis. Cleaning up that level of mismanagement cannot happen in just two years. What miracle do critics expect?” he said.

He also accused opposition figures of hypocrisy, noting that many of them were part of previous administrations that contributed to the very problems they now criticize.

“The challenges we face today did not start recently. Many of those complaining were involved before. I can outline each of their roles if needed,” Ajiboye remarked.

Defending President Tinubu’s frequent foreign trips, Ajiboye emphasized that international engagement is vital for attracting investment and driving economic recovery.

“You cannot run a country from one location. Strong alliances are essential for a thriving economy. I accompanied him to Brazil and witnessed the progress firsthand. Now, he is in Abu Dhabi, and investment opportunities are materializing,” he added.
