APC Chieftain Justifies Increasing Defections, Says One-Party Dominance Not a Problem

A senior All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, George Agbakahi, has provided insight into the recent wave of defections to the ruling party, linking it to what he describes as an unprecedented level of internal cohesion and political unity.

Speaking on Arise Television, Agbakahi argued that the APC’s consolidation does not signal a threat to democracy but reflects a system of dominant-party politics. “It may not officially become a one-party state, but it will evolve into a one-party dominant system, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that,” he stated, framing the trend as a positive development for Nigeria’s political landscape.

Agbakahi attributed the party’s strengthened position to its willingness to learn from past mistakes. He noted that the APC has recognized shortcomings during the 2023 elections and is taking deliberate steps to improve internal structures, increase discipline, and boost regional engagement. According to him, this approach has naturally attracted politicians from other parties seeking a more stable and united platform.

The APC chieftain highlighted the party’s recent event in Enugu as evidence of growing enthusiasm and support. “What happened in Enugu over the weekend was a powerful and overwhelming show of support for President Bola Tinubu,” he said. “The atmosphere was filled with unity, love, and unwavering commitment from APC members in the Southeast, and it was broadcast nationwide.”

Agbakahi also underscored the strategic alignment of Southeast leaders within the party. He explained that governors such as Hope Uzodinma of Imo, along with Ebonyi and Enugu State governors, have synchronized their efforts with Southeast members of the APC National Working Committee. This coordinated approach, he suggested, is aimed at expanding the party’s influence in the region and ensuring cohesive governance across key states.

In his analysis, Agbakahi dismissed concerns that dominance by one party could undermine political competition. Instead, he framed it as a natural evolution of Nigeria’s democratic process: a system where a party gains widespread acceptance without eliminating the existence of opposition parties. “There is nothing inherently problematic about one party being dominant, provided that democratic institutions remain intact,” he emphasized.

Political commentators observing these developments note that the APC’s focus on unity and regional engagement may significantly enhance its electoral prospects in the Southeast ahead of upcoming elections. The party’s ability to retain both grassroots support and elite endorsement will likely determine its long-term dominance, while also shaping opposition strategies in key states.
