A senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), George Agbakahi, has stated that the increasing number of politicians defecting to the ruling party is a result of what he describes as the party’s new level of unity—something he claims has not been seen since 1999.
During an interview on Arise Television, Agbakahi argued that there is nothing inherently problematic about a system where one party dominates the political space.
He explained that the APC has acknowledged past errors and is now taking corrective steps to strengthen its internal structure.
According to him, “It may not officially become a one-party state, but it will evolve into a one-party dominant system, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.”
Agbakahi highlighted the massive turnout and excitement witnessed at a recent APC event in Enugu, which, according to him, signaled widespread endorsement of President Bola Tinubu.
“What happened in Enugu over the weekend was a powerful and overwhelming show of support for President Bola Tinubu. The APC event, which was broadcast nationwide, generated huge enthusiasm. The atmosphere was filled with unity, love, and unwavering support from APC members in the Southeast,” he said.
He added that the party has learned vital lessons from its shortcomings in the 2023 elections and is now committed to avoiding similar mistakes.
Agbakahi emphasized that Southeast political leaders within the APC—led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, alongside the governors of Ebonyi and Enugu—have now aligned with Southeast members of the National Working Committee to strengthen the party’s regional influence.
