The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has criticised opposition parties across Nigeria, accusing them of being weak, disorganised, and lacking clear leadership or ideology as the 2027 general elections approach.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the party’s spokesman, Seye Oladejo, described the current state of opposition politics as “a danger to democratic health,” expressing concern over what he called a “deteriorating and rudderless opposition.”
“Rather than serve as credible watchdogs, policy challengers, or intellectual counterweights to the ruling party, the opposition has degenerated into a coalition of desperation, confusion, and hypocrisy — the very bane of Nigeria’s democratic growth,” Oladejo said.
He noted that the absence of a vibrant and organised opposition was unhealthy for democracy, adding that the strength of any democratic system depends largely on the quality of its dissenting voices.
“The health of any democracy is measured by the quality, depth, and seriousness of its opposition — its ideas, organisation, and consistency. Sadly, Nigeria’s opposition has failed woefully on all counts. It lacks leadership, cohesion, and a unifying political philosophy,” he stated.
Oladejo also accused opposition figures of political opportunism and inconsistency, alleging that many switch parties for personal gain rather than ideological conviction.
“The nation has watched in disbelief as individuals who once claimed to stand for ideological purity now leapfrog from one platform to another in search of personal relevance. The opposition’s moral compass has been completely eroded, leaving behind a band of opportunists united only by their lust for power,” he said.
Drawing a comparison, the Lagos APC spokesman praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s legacy as a disciplined and visionary opposition leader during his years in politics, describing him as a “master strategist and democrat.”
“Under Tinubu’s leadership, opposition politics was defined by clarity of purpose, ideological direction, and consistency of engagement. He offered Nigerians a credible alternative founded on progressivism, good governance, and national unity,” Oladejo added.
He said the APC itself emerged as “a product of that ideological discipline,” proving that visionary and responsible opposition politics could transform into national leadership.
Opposition Has No Roadmap
Oladejo further argued that President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda was being executed with “courage and clarity,” while opposition parties have failed to present any coherent policy roadmap for Nigeria’s economy, education, or security.
“It is troubling that none of the opposition parties has presented any workable plan for the nation. Their only strategy is to demonise government policies without offering credible alternatives,” he said.
He warned that the “visionless and unserious opposition” was eroding public trust and reducing national discourse “to mere noise and confusion.”
“Democracy thrives on choice, and when one side of the political divide consistently fails to evolve, citizens naturally disengage from the process,” he noted.
Oladejo urged opposition parties to rebuild their structures, rediscover their purpose, and engage more constructively, saying that a healthy democracy requires responsible dissent just as much as effective governance.
