Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing its administration as the worst he has encountered in nearly four decades of active political involvement.
Atiku made the remarks on Tuesday while speaking at the launch of The Loyalist, a book authored by the National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.
The former vice president, who is a prominent member of the ADC, said he was encouraged by the diversity of political actors who have united under the party’s platform, describing it as a rare coalition driven by a shared commitment to rescue Nigeria and revitalise its democratic process.
He expressed appreciation to contributors and supporters of the book launch, noting that their efforts had helped enrich political discourse in the country.
Urging Nigerians to read The Loyalist, Atiku said the book should be regarded as more than a personal story, but as a guide for public service and national development.
“Let it serve as a compass in the execution of our public duties, and may it inspire sustained dialogue, research, and action that promote justice, equity, dignity, and opportunity for all Nigerians,” he said.
Atiku stated that Nigeria is currently at a critical crossroads that demands collective effort, insisting that the present administration has caused unprecedented harm to the nation.
“If there is anything commendable in our recent political evolution, it is this collective resolve to rescue the country from what I regard as the worst administration I have witnessed in nearly forty years of political life,” he said.
He added, “Not even the military regimes before 1999 inflicted damage on our national psyche and institutions in the manner this government has done.”
The former vice president recalled that many members of the ADC were among the founding architects of the APC but acknowledged that the party had failed to fulfil its original promise.
“Several of us here were involved in establishing the APC. Sadly, the vision we believed would transform the nation has not materialised,” he stated.
Atiku maintained that just as political leaders once united to create an alternative political platform, there is now a renewed responsibility to rally behind a new political movement capable of restoring Nigeria’s hope.
“Just as we once accepted the responsibility of coming together to form a political alternative, we must again unite to ensure the emergence of a new platform that can rescue and reposition this country for the benefit of its people,” he added.
