APC Leader Alleges Alex Otti Is Maneuvering To Control Local Government Funds In Abia

A political dispute has emerged in Abia State following allegations by a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Paul Ikonne, who claims that Governor Alex Otti is attempting to gain continued influence over local government finances.

Ikonne, a well-known APC figure and former Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), made the claims during an interview on Television Continental (TVC). His remarks focused on the broader debate surrounding local government autonomy in Nigeria.

According to Ikonne, some state governors are resisting the federal government’s directive aimed at strengthening the financial independence of local government councils.

He suggested that the Abia State government may be seeking ways to retain control over funds meant for local councils through legislative adjustments or administrative mechanisms.

Ikonne alleged that the state administration could be considering changes to existing laws that would enable the governor to maintain authority over the disbursement of local government resources.

Such a move, he argued, would contradict the principle of local government autonomy that the federal government has encouraged states to adopt.

While discussing the issue, Ikonne referenced developments in Lagos State as an example of how local councils can operate independently and implement development projects within their communities.

He noted that local government authorities in Lagos have been actively involved in delivering projects such as schools and healthcare facilities.

According to him, the essence of the local government structure is to bring governance closer to the grassroots population.

He emphasized that local councils are meant to directly address the needs of everyday citizens, including farmers, vulnerable groups, and residents in rural communities.

Ikonne also questioned the state of local government administration in Abia, claiming that the system has become weakened.

He argued that the current structure makes it difficult to identify visible projects executed directly by local government authorities in the state.

The APC leader further called on the Abia State government to provide greater transparency regarding the management of funds allocated to local councils.

In his view, a government elected on the platform of reform should demonstrate accountability in the administration of public resources.

He suggested that clearer financial reporting and stronger local government structures would help address public concerns about how funds are being managed.

Ikonne also remarked that the situation has contributed to skepticism among some residents about the performance of the party currently governing the state.

Commentary and Analysis

The debate surrounding local government autonomy remains one of the most contentious governance issues in Nigeria.

Many political analysts argue that strengthening local councils could improve service delivery at the grassroots level, particularly in sectors such as primary healthcare, education, and rural infrastructure.

However, tensions often arise between state governments and advocates of full local government independence, especially regarding control over financial allocations.

The allegations raised by Prince Paul Ikonne illustrate the broader national conversation about accountability, fiscal transparency, and the proper role of state governments in managing local council funds.

As discussions continue, the issue is likely to remain a key topic in Nigerian political discourse, particularly as citizens demand more visible development projects within their communities.
