The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State has resolved to adopt a consensus method for selecting party officials at all levels—ward, local government, state, and national—ahead of its upcoming congresses.

The resolution was reached on Tuesday during an expanded meeting of the party’s State Executive Council held at the Government House in Lafia.

The decision followed a motion introduced by the party’s Legal Adviser and backed by Governor Abdullahi Sule, which allowed non-executive members to take part in the deliberations. This move broadened stakeholder involvement and laid the groundwork for a more inclusive decision-making process within the party.

Subsequently, the APC state chairman, Dr Aliyu Bello, invited Hon. Hassan Abubakar Nalaraba—who represents the Awe/Doma/Keana Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and also serves as a state executive member—to formally move the motion endorsing consensus.

While presenting the motion, Nalaraba stated that the expanded State Executive Council should adopt consensus as the preferred mode for selecting party officials at all congress levels, provided the process is transparent and voluntarily agreed upon by all stakeholders.

The motion was seconded by the APC Deputy National Secretary, Prof. Abdulkarim Abubakar Kana (SAN).

Former Nasarawa State governor and ex-National Chairman of the APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, who chaired the meeting, thereafter conducted a voice vote. Members unanimously approved the adoption of consensus.

Earlier in his remarks, Dr Bello explained that the meeting was convened to update party leaders and stakeholders on recent developments within the APC, especially following changes under the new national leadership. He also noted that the party continued to gain traction across the state, with more political actors defecting to its fold.

Consensus Will Ensure Stability – Sule

Governor Sule welcomed the decision, describing the consensus approach as a strategic move that would help avert internal conflicts during the congresses.

“You have significantly reduced the chances of disputes. The congresses will now be conducted through consensus, agreed upon by stakeholders and presented to us,” the governor said.

He reaffirmed his commitment to the principle of zoning, noting that it played a key role in his emergence as governor and has continued to promote political balance and harmony in the state.

The governor also used the opportunity to highlight some of his administration’s achievements, describing 2025 as the most resource-abundant year in Nasarawa State’s history.

The meeting was attended by several prominent APC figures, including Senator Abdullahi Adamu; former Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi; members of the National and State Assemblies; current and former government officials; and other key party stakeholders.
