Reports from Ondo State indicate a serious political dispute in Akure South Local Government Area, where the Ward 8 Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Oluwadare Olanrewaju, has reportedly fallen into a coma following a violent confrontation. The attack is allegedly linked to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s Senior Special Assistant on Community Engagement (Central), Oluwafemi Fadairo, popularly called “Fada.”
The incident reportedly arose from a disagreement over the distribution of ₦1 million allocated to each ward during the governor’s appreciation tour. Sources allege that Fadairo attempted to have Olanrewaju include names of his personal supporters among the beneficiaries. When the ward chairman refused to comply, tensions escalated into a physical assault.
According to a statement released by the Forum of APC Ward Chairmen in Akure South, Olanrewaju was “repeatedly threatened, stalked, and eventually beaten until he lost consciousness,” necessitating urgent hospital care. The forum condemned the act as unacceptable and contrary to principles of responsible leadership. “Leadership should be about protection, not harm. Anyone who encourages violence is unworthy of public office,” the statement added.
The forum further emphasized that the incident reflects poorly on those connected to the governor’s office, describing it as both disgraceful and intolerable. Authorities have reportedly been alerted, with the matter officially reported to both the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 17, Akure.
Commentary and Analysis
This alarming event highlights the dangerous intersection of politics and personal ambition at the local level. Alleged attempts to manipulate public funds for partisan loyalty raise concerns about accountability and governance within political party structures. Observers note that if substantiated, such violent incidents can undermine public confidence in elected officials and their aides.
The situation also underscores the need for stringent mechanisms to prevent political disputes from escalating into physical confrontations. Local political offices must prioritize transparency in fund allocation and ensure protection for officials who act with integrity, as illustrated by Olanrewaju’s resistance to interference.
This case may also have wider implications for APC’s internal cohesion in Ondo State, especially ahead of future elections. How the DSS and police respond could set a precedent for handling politically motivated violence in the region.
