‘Are Governors the Only Thieves?’ Gov Radda Takes Swipe at Critics

Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has responded to widespread criticism directed at Nigerian governors over corruption, arguing that it is unfair to portray state leaders as the only public officials involved in financial misconduct.

The governor expressed his views during an interview with Radio France Internationale (RFI), portions of which were later shared on social media, where he addressed issues of governance, accountability, and public perception.

Radda said the narrative that governors are the primary culprits behind corruption in Nigeria oversimplifies a complex national problem.

According to him, several corruption cases in the country involve individuals who have never served as state governors.

He argued that focusing blame solely on governors ignores the broader reality that corruption exists across multiple sectors of society.

The governor questioned the tendency to single out governors as the central figures in discussions about financial wrongdoing.

He noted that some individuals who criticise political leaders may themselves lack the moral authority to judge others.

Radda pointed out that numerous cases have emerged in which people were found in possession of large sums of illicit money without ever holding a governorship position.

In making his point, he raised a rhetorical question about whether governors are truly the only individuals responsible for corrupt practices in Nigeria.

The Katsina leader also urged Nigerians to approach political criticism with greater balance and responsibility.

He warned that public discourse should avoid turning into a cycle of blanket accusations and personal attacks.

For him, leadership should be evaluated based on performance and accountability rather than generalised assumptions.

Radda further reflected on the ethical dimension of governance.

He reminded public office holders that leadership is a responsibility entrusted to them by the people.

Even if individuals manage to evade public scrutiny, he said they remain answerable to a higher moral authority.

According to the governor, those who misuse public trust will eventually face judgement beyond the political arena.

Beyond corruption, Radda also addressed the broader issue of national security.

He stressed that tackling insecurity requires a cooperative effort between government institutions and ordinary citizens.

The governor emphasized that lasting peace cannot be achieved through government action alone.

Instead, he encouraged Nigerians to support initiatives aimed at strengthening security and promoting stability across communities.

Commentary and Analysis

Governor Radda’s remarks highlight the continuing debate about corruption and governance in Nigeria.

While governors often face intense scrutiny due to their control over large state budgets, critics argue that corruption is a systemic issue affecting multiple layers of government and public institutions.

Radda’s response suggests a need for a more comprehensive discussion about accountability across all sectors of society.

At the same time, his emphasis on moral responsibility reflects a broader expectation that public officials should demonstrate transparency and integrity in managing public resources.

His comments on security also underscore the importance of collective responsibility in addressing Nigeria’s challenges.

As the country continues to grapple with governance and security issues, the balance between criticism, accountability, and constructive engagement will remain central to public discourse.
