Arms Discovered In Malami’s Kebbi Residence Amid Ongoing Investigation

The legal challenges surrounding former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), have escalated following reports of firearms allegedly discovered at his residence in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. While Malami had been granted bail alongside his son, Abdulaziz, and wife, Asabe Bashir, he remains in custody at Kuje Correctional Centre after failing to meet the court’s strict bail conditions.

Sources indicate that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) initially uncovered the weapons during a property search. Given that possession of firearms is outside the EFCC’s jurisdiction, the seized arms were transferred to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation. Though the exact number of firearms has not been confirmed, insiders describe the cache as substantial enough to warrant a dedicated probe.

A security source revealed that Malami may be delaying his bail completion strategically. “Malami has slowed down his bail processing as DSS operatives surround Kuje Prison, preparing to arrest him on terrorism-related charges once he is released,” the insider said. Another official noted that he will now have to justify the presence of the weapons to DSS authorities.

Heightened security measures have reportedly been implemented around Kuje Correctional Centre, with DSS personnel stationed strategically to monitor the situation. Meanwhile, the EFCC has dismissed social media claims suggesting Malami has been released and welcomed back to Kebbi State.

An EFCC representative clarified, “By our records, the ex-AGF is still in custody. There are numerous fake videos circulating online suggesting he has returned to Kebbi and was given a rousing reception.” The official added that Malami’s investigation is longstanding, tracing back to 2019 during the tenure of former EFCC Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu. It has continued under successive EFCC leadership and persists under the current administration.

Commentary: Legal Implications and Security Concerns

The discovery of firearms at a high-profile public official’s residence raises both legal and security questions. While Malami faces scrutiny for failing to satisfy bail requirements, the separate DSS investigation suggests potential criminal liabilities beyond financial misconduct. The situation also highlights the interplay between multiple Nigerian security agencies when high-stakes allegations involve political figures.

Analysts note that the ongoing saga may further strain public trust in governance and legal accountability, especially given the protracted nature of the investigation dating back years. How the courts and security agencies proceed will be closely watched, particularly concerning Malami’s compliance with bail conditions and explanations regarding the discovered weapons.
