Former Nigerian Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has formally joined the African Democratic Congress, expressing optimism that the party could emerge as a major force ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Nigerian general elections.
The veteran politician completed his registration in Yola, where party members and supporters gathered to witness the symbolic event. Images shared afterward showed him receiving his official membership credentials as well as a specially designed jersey bearing the inscription “Waziri 01,” referencing his traditional title.
According to Gossip News Now reports that the brief ceremony drew various political stakeholders from across Adamawa State, including community leaders, party officials, youth representatives, and grassroots supporters.
Following the event, Atiku used social media to highlight what he described as the party’s expanding national movement. He pointed to recent political activities in Jalingo, where a new secretariat linked to coalition efforts had been unveiled, suggesting the party’s reach continues to grow across several regions.
The former vice-president suggested that the party’s nationwide engagement reflects increasing interest among Nigerians seeking alternative political platforms ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Meanwhile, media entrepreneur Dele Momodu, publisher of Ovation Magazine, also voiced support for broader opposition cooperation around Atiku.
Speaking during a lecture that marked celebrations in Jada, Momodu reflected on Atiku’s long political career and called for a unified front among opposition figures, describing it as an important step toward what he termed a national political renewal.
He referenced historical moments in Nigerian politics to illustrate Atiku’s role in previous democratic contests. One example highlighted was the 1993 Social Democratic Party presidential primary, during which Atiku stepped aside to support the eventual candidate, Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.
Momodu further praised Atiku’s political style, describing him as a figure who has often chosen dialogue over confrontation despite facing numerous political setbacks throughout his career.
Commentary and Analysis
Atiku’s move to align with the African Democratic Congress may signal a new phase in Nigeria’s opposition politics as the country gradually moves toward the 2027 elections.
Political analysts note that coalition-building has historically played a major role in shaping Nigeria’s electoral outcomes. The ability of opposition leaders to unite behind shared strategies could significantly influence the balance of political power in the coming years.
The endorsement from figures like Dele Momodu also suggests that discussions around broader alliances may already be underway. Whether such partnerships materialize into a strong political movement remains one of the key questions ahead of Nigeria’s next national vote.
