Prominent African Democratic Congress (ADC) figure, Dele Momodu, has stated that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar remains one of the strongest contenders for Nigeria’s presidency.
Momodu described Atiku as disciplined and principled, noting that despite long-standing political disagreements with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the former vice president has never publicly attacked or insulted his former leader.
He made the remarks while responding to questions during an 𝕏 Space discussion titled “Avrilsspace: The Electoral Mathematics for 2027.”
According to Momodu, Atiku’s long political journey and personal conduct place him in a favourable position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“If God permits, Atiku could emerge as Nigeria’s Abraham Lincoln in 2027,” Momodu said, adding that the final outcome rests in divine hands.
He explained that his support was not driven by blind loyalty but by political realism.
“I am not a desperate supporter of anyone,” he said. “But looking at the political landscape today, Atiku stands the best chance. He is healthy, his business interests are stable, and his family life is admirable.”
Momodu further praised Atiku’s lifestyle, describing it as modest and consistent over the years.
“Despite occasional political disagreements with his former boss, Obasanjo, Atiku has maintained decorum and has never resorted to insults or personal attacks,” he noted.
Atiku Abubakar has remained a major figure in Nigeria’s political space for decades. His presidential ambition dates back to 1993, when he stepped down for Chief MKO Abiola during the Social Democratic Party (SDP) primaries held in Jos, Plateau State.
In the 2023 presidential election, Atiku contested but was defeated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
With the 2027 general elections approaching, there are growing indications that the former vice president may once again seek Nigeria’s highest office.
