Atiku Welcomes Peter Obi to ADC Describes Defection as Major Coalition Milestone

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reacted to Peter Obi’s defection from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the development as an important turning point in Nigeria’s coalition politics.

Obi, alongside several prominent political figures from the South-East geopolitical zone, formally announced their decision to join the ADC on Wednesday in Enugu State. The group said the move was motivated by a shared determination to confront what they described as poor governance under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking at the event, Obi urged opposition leaders across the country to set aside differences and unite ahead of the 2027 general elections. He called on like-minded political actors to rally under the ADC platform, which is currently led by former Senate President, David Mark, in a bid to reposition Nigeria.

Reacting to the development via a post on his official 𝕏 account, Atiku expressed optimism about the emerging alliance, noting that Obi’s entry into the ADC strengthens efforts to build a credible and effective opposition.

Atiku said he looks forward to a productive collaboration that would help nurture a strong opposition movement capable of forming a government that delivers peace, stability, and economic prosperity to Nigerians.

He formally welcomed Obi into the party and expressed hope that the declaration in Enugu would encourage other well-meaning Nigerians to join the coalition as it gains momentum across the country.

According to Atiku, the growing ADC coalition represents a collective effort aimed at reshaping Nigeria’s political future and offering citizens a viable alternative ahead of the next election cycle.
