Demola Olarenwaju, a senior aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has commended Peter Obi for leaving the Labour Party to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the defection as a defining moment in Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
Obi made his official switch to the ADC on Tuesday in Enugu State, prompting reactions from major political figures across the nation.
Through his official 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account, Olarenwaju urged supporters of both Atiku and Obi to move past political rivalries and collaborate on a unified opposition front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He highlighted the uncertain trajectory of Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, emphasizing the critical need for opposition forces to come together in pursuit of national stability and progress.
Olarenwaju also noted that political analysts had long anticipated Obi’s move, recognizing it as part of the natural realignment within Nigeria’s opposition. He called on loyalists from both camps—commonly known as Atikulates and Obidients—to prioritize cooperation over rivalry to secure the country’s future.
Meanwhile, Obi, speaking during his formal ADC declaration in Enugu on Wednesday, reiterated concerns about the rising tolerance and celebration of electoral malpractice in Nigeria.
The former Anambra State governor warned that any attempt to manipulate the 2027 elections would face lawful and democratic resistance. He criticized politicians who, after benefiting from democratic processes, now seek to undermine them through intimidation and political thuggery against opposition groups.
Obi also advocated for early and transparent verification of candidates’ academic qualifications to prevent unnecessary legal disputes ahead of elections, stressing that glorifying electoral fraud threatens the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.
