Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, rejecting attempts to coerce opposition politicians into joining the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor accused the APC-led administration of misusing state powers, including anti-corruption agencies, to intimidate and harass members of opposition parties in a bid to stifle dissent nationwide.
Speaking on Wednesday after signing the 2026 Appropriation Bill into law at the Government House in Bauchi, Mohammed urged the Federal Government to shift its focus toward tackling poverty and the soaring cost of living instead of political intimidation.
He stressed that Nigerians face pressing economic challenges that demand urgent and genuine policy solutions, not political schemes designed to pressure politicians to abandon their parties.
“The Federal Government should prioritize easing poverty and the rising cost of living rather than deploying state machinery to silence opposition voices,” the governor stated.
Mohammed further alleged that anti-corruption agencies are being weaponized to intimidate opposition figures, extending pressure to include their families and associates.
“This harassment has not spared me, my family, or my administration officials. It is a deliberate effort to suppress dissent in the country,” he said.
The governor also expressed concerns over the conduct of the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), claiming the electoral body is being positioned to serve partisan interests. He warned that such actions could erode public trust in INEC and undermine Nigeria’s democratic processes.
Mohammed insisted that the electoral commission must remain impartial, operating strictly within constitutional guidelines.
Reaffirming his commitment to his political principles, the governor declared that no intimidation, rumors, or propaganda would force him to defect to the ruling party.
“I will continue to stand for justice, fairness, and the welfare of Nigerians, while remaining committed to the development and progress of Bauchi State,” he affirmed.
