Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has openly challenged the Federal Government’s attempts to pressure opposition politicians into joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He accused the APC-led administration of abusing state powers, including the deployment of anti-corruption agencies, to intimidate opposition figures and suppress dissent across Nigeria.
Speaking on Wednesday after signing the 2026 Appropriation Bill at the Government House in Bauchi, Mohammed urged the Federal Government to focus on pressing economic issues such as poverty and the rising cost of living, rather than political coercion.
“The Federal Government should prioritize easing poverty and the rising cost of living rather than deploying state machinery to silence opposition voices,” the governor emphasized.
Mohammed claimed that harassment by state agencies has extended beyond politicians to include their families and close associates. “This harassment has not spared me, my family, or my administration officials. It is a deliberate effort to suppress dissent in the country,” he added.
He also raised concerns about the impartiality of the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), cautioning that the current trajectory could compromise public trust and weaken Nigeria’s democratic institutions. The governor stressed that INEC must remain strictly nonpartisan and adhere to constitutional guidelines.
Reaffirming his dedication to his political convictions, Mohammed declared that neither intimidation, rumors, nor propaganda would compel him to defect to the ruling party.
“I will continue to stand for justice, fairness, and the welfare of Nigerians, while remaining committed to the development and progress of Bauchi State,” he stated.
