The government of Bauchi State, under Governor Bala Mohammed, has appointed 142 district heads across the state’s 20 emirates and one chiefdom, in a move designed to strengthen traditional governance and enhance local administration.

All appointees have received their letters of appointment, enabling them to assume their roles immediately.

The Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Abubakar Muhammad Wabi, made this disclosure during a press briefing in Bauchi on Monday, explaining the rationale and legal framework for the exercise.

According to Wabi, the appointments were carried out in accordance with the Bauchi State Chieftaincy (Appointment and Deposition) Law 2025, which provides the legal basis for restructuring, recognizing, and effectively operating traditional institutions in the state.

“This exercise strictly follows the Bauchi State Chieftaincy (Appointment and Deposition) Law 2025, which empowers the government to strengthen and reorganize traditional governance structures,” he said.

He added that the implementation of the law led to the establishment of 20 Emirate Councils and one chiefdom, making it necessary to appoint qualified district heads to oversee local affairs.

The newly appointed district heads are expected to serve as key links between their communities and government authorities, particularly in areas such as security, conflict resolution, and community development.

“These appointments will enhance coordination between traditional rulers and government authorities, especially at the grassroots level, where traditional institutions remain closest to the people,” Wabi explained.

He commended Governor Bala Mohammed for his leadership and commitment to reforming traditional institutions, and also acknowledged the support of other stakeholders in ensuring the successful implementation of the new chieftaincy law.

Wabi urged the district heads to carry out their duties with responsibility, fairness, and accountability, emphasizing the state government’s commitment to promoting peace, unity, and sustainable development through strong and credible traditional institutions.

“The expectation is that these district heads will diligently serve their communities and uphold the values of fairness, accountability, and service, as the government continues to foster peace, unity, and sustainable development across Bauchi State,” he said.
