A seven-year-old girl in Magama Gumau, Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, is battling severe injuries after she was allegedly brutalised by her uncle’s wife, identified as Suwaira Ibrahim, who placed a heated knife on the child’s private part, accusing her of being a witch.

According to reports, the disturbing incident left the girl, identified as Habiba (not real name), in excruciating pain and struggling with life-threatening wounds.

A resident and human rights activist in the area, Kabiru Mohammed Abdulkadir, explained that the assault began after Suwaira’s child claimed she had seen Habiba among a group of “witches.” The girl was subsequently taken to a man for confirmation, who declared that she was not a witch. However, Suwaira reportedly rejected his verdict.

Abdulkadir narrated:

“They returned home and Suwaira put a knife or spoon on fire and pressed it against the little girl’s private part. She believed that if the girl was truly a witch, she would not feel pain. Her loud cries attracted neighbours, and when we rushed there, we saw her condition and insisted the matter be reported to the police.”

Video evidence obtained by journalists showed that the child sustained severe burns to her private part and thighs, with the wounds already decaying. According to Abdulkadir, the injuries have made it extremely difficult for the girl to urinate or defecate, while the foul smell from the infection has become unbearable for the household.

The victim has since been taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for urgent medical treatment.

Police Intervention

Confirming the incident, Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Ahmed Wakil, said the matter was reported at the Toro Divisional Police Headquarters before being referred to the State Command for proper investigation and prosecution.
