Bimbo Akintola: ‘With the Way the World Is Going, People Should Embrace Polygamy’

Veteran Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has called on Nigerians to be more accepting of polygamy, describing it as part of the country’s cultural heritage.

In a recent interview with actress Biola Bayo, the 55-year-old star explained that polygamy was once a normal practice, particularly among Yoruba families, where it was common for men to have more than one wife.

According to Akintola, the current imbalance in the male-to-female ratio makes it reasonable for women to consider sharing a husband. She gave an example of a woman she knows who introduced a second wife into her home because her husband’s sexual needs were greater than hers, and she wanted peace in her marriage rather than constant pressure.

The actress argued that some women willingly accept polygamy if it ensures harmony within the household. At the same time, she advised parents who believe in monogamy to focus on instilling discipline, respect, and strong values in their sons from an early age—since many men who cheat or take multiple wives often lack proper upbringing.

“With the way the world is going, people should embrace polygamy,” Akintola said. “Statistics show we don’t have enough men, so why shouldn’t two women share one? It is also part of our tradition. Growing up, we saw many of our parents and older generations with two or three wives. Yes, there are disadvantages, but there are also advantages.

“I know women who prefer to have a co-wife. In fact, I know someone who found a second wife for her husband so she could rest. Their libidos were different—his was much higher—and she felt it was the best solution for peace in her home.”
