Bode George Calls Wike–Makinde Feud an Embarrassment to PDP

Tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have drawn criticism from a senior party figure, Bode George, who has expressed worry about the growing disagreement between Nyesom Wike and Seyi Makinde.

George described the ongoing confrontation between the two prominent politicians as damaging to the party’s image, noting that the dispute has become a subject of widespread discussion across Nigeria’s political landscape.

Appeal for Calm and Internal Resolution

During an interview on the political programme Politics Today aired by Channels Television, the PDP elder urged both men to reduce the tension and seek a more constructive approach to resolving their differences.

According to him, disagreements are inevitable in politics, but they should be managed responsibly within the party’s internal mechanisms rather than through public exchanges that could weaken the party’s unity.

He emphasized that political maturity requires leaders to prioritize the collective interest of the party over personal disputes.

Roots of the Disagreement

The conflict between the two politicians has reportedly been linked to broader leadership challenges currently affecting the PDP. Rival factions within the party have emerged in recent months, intensifying internal struggles for influence.

The dispute gained further attention after Wike publicly suggested that Makinde’s dissatisfaction stemmed from not receiving a ministerial position in the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Wike’s Account of Events

Speaking in Port Harcourt, Wike addressed criticisms directed at him and explained how the matter was previously discussed among members of the well-known G-5 political bloc.

According to him, the group—which included figures such as Okezie Ikpeazu, Samuel Ortom, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi—had deliberated on the issue during internal meetings.

He claimed that during one of their engagements with President Tinubu, the subject of Makinde’s alleged grievances was raised.

At that meeting, Wike said, the president acknowledged that there might have been factors he did not initially take into account when forming his cabinet.

Additional Points of Friction

Wike also referred to a political event held in Port Harcourt where discussions about supporting the president for a potential second term reportedly sparked disagreement.

According to his account, Makinde reacted strongly and later voiced his concerns publicly through media channels.

These exchanges have fueled speculation about deeper divisions within the PDP and raised questions about the party’s internal cohesion.

Commentary and Analysis

Political analysts suggest that internal rivalries among influential figures can significantly affect the stability of opposition parties. In the case of the PDP, tensions between high-profile leaders such as Wike and Makinde risk overshadowing broader party strategies.

Bode George’s intervention reflects concerns among senior party members that prolonged disputes could weaken the PDP’s ability to present a unified front in future elections.

Observers note that resolving the conflict through internal dialogue may be critical for the party as it prepares for upcoming political contests. Without reconciliation, continued public disagreements could deepen factional divides and complicate efforts to rebuild party unity.
