A senior leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bode George, has reacted strongly to the reported departure of Ademola Adeleke from the party, describing the move as a decision driven by political survival rather than principle.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos, George suggested that while party members are free to leave if they wish, such exits often reflect deeper struggles within the political environment. He compared the development to a natural process in which organisations sometimes lose members when internal tensions become difficult to manage.
The PDP elder stated that Adeleke’s decision may have been influenced by the ongoing disputes within the party but maintained that individuals who no longer feel aligned with the party’s direction have the right to pursue other political paths.
Allegations Against the Federal Government
Beyond addressing Adeleke’s reported exit, George also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of attempting to weaken opposition structures in the country.
He argued that the federal government under Bola Ahmed Tinubu should focus more on national challenges, particularly security concerns, rather than political manoeuvring ahead of future elections.
According to Gossip News Now, George said the rising incidents of violence and kidnappings across different regions of Nigeria demand urgent government attention.
Criticism of Wike’s Role in PDP Disputes
The PDP chieftain also directed criticism toward Nyesom Wike, whom he accused of interfering in the internal affairs of the opposition party.
George referenced the disruption that occurred at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja in November 2025, describing the incident as troubling and raising questions about how security agencies responded during the confrontation.
He expressed concern over the use of force and the reported presence of police officers at the party headquarters during the dispute, suggesting that the situation reflected a broader pattern of political interference.
Appeal for Political Restraint
In his remarks, George urged President Tinubu to ensure that government officials avoid actions that could deepen political divisions.
He also reminded Wike of his long association with the PDP, noting that the party played a significant role in his political rise through various positions, including local government chairman, minister, and governor.
The veteran politician concluded by cautioning that political influence is temporary and that leaders should consider how their actions may shape their legacy in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Commentary and Analysis
The comments by Bode George highlight the persistent tensions within Nigeria’s opposition politics. Internal disagreements within the PDP have led to competing factions and public disputes involving some of the party’s most prominent figures.
Political analysts note that party unity often becomes difficult to maintain when rival groups struggle for influence or leadership control. These conflicts can sometimes weaken opposition parties and affect their ability to present a coordinated political strategy.
As Nigeria gradually moves toward the next electoral cycle, the ability of political parties to manage internal disputes while addressing national concerns may play a significant role in shaping the country’s democratic landscape.
