Broom traders across Enugu State are enjoying a surge in sales following the defection of Governor Peter Mbah from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reports indicate that demand for brooms—the official symbol of the APC—has skyrocketed as supporters rush to purchase them for rallies, celebrations, and defection ceremonies.
According to Gossip News Now, Governor Mbah and his appointees formally announced their exit from the PDP after an extended cabinet meeting on Monday at the Government House in Enugu.
A video shared by the governor’s media aide, Dan Nwomeh, confirmed the defection, showing officials waving APC flags and chanting slogans in praise of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Mbah.
In the video, party supporters were heard chanting:
“We are now in APC. Tomorrow is here; it is APC all the way; it is Jagaban all the way.”
Following the announcement, a wave of broom purchases swept through Enugu’s major markets, including Kenyatta, Artisan, and Udi, as traders struggled to meet the unprecedented demand.
A correspondent from Leadership Newspaper who visited these markets observed that brooms had become scarce, prompting new vendors to join the trade.
One trader, Obinna Maduagwu, said the governor’s move had transformed their business overnight:
“Honestly, since the rumour started, business has been booming. I’ve been supplying and making serious money. Many people have joined the business, and we’re all selling fast. I even want more politicians to join the APC so we can make more money,” he said.
At Kenyatta Market, Mrs. Ifeoma Obigeri shared a similar experience, revealing that both her old and new stock sold out almost immediately.
“Peter Mbah’s defection has been a blessing to broom sellers. My entire stock finished this morning when some PDP members came to buy everything,” she said.
Likewise, Miss Ifeoma Ngene from Amokwe, Udi Market, confirmed that her entire inventory was cleared out by members of the APC women’s wing:
“They bought everything I had on Friday and even told me to restock for them,” she said.
At Artisan Market, Mrs. Grace Okeke expressed joy over the sales boom, saying she had completely sold out:
“How I wish this kind of political event happened every day. As I speak, I don’t have a single broom left. The APC people cleared everything for tomorrow’s rally,” she said.
With Governor Mbah’s defection, the APC now controls three of the five Southeast states, while the Labour Party and APGA each hold one. The once-dominant PDP has now lost its final stronghold in the region.
