Afrobeats superstar Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has opened up about his past relationship with late South African rapper AKA.
Reports indicate that the two artists fell out in 2019 after Burna Boy reportedly threatened to “deal” with AKA if they ever crossed paths.
The tension arose following allegations that the South African rapper had encouraged xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa after sharing screenshots of hate messages he claimed to have received from Nigerian accounts, linked to AFCON quarterfinal match banter.
Reflecting on the past, Burna Boy revealed that the beef was resolved before AKA’s passing, though they never had the chance to fully collaborate on planned projects.
In a heartfelt post on Instagram marking what would have been AKA’s birthday, Burna Boy expressed regret that they could not bring their plans to fruition.
He wrote:
“Happy birthday Supa Mega. We fell out over bullsh*t even though we squashed it over Twitter DMs nobody knew about. We never got the chance to really link up and do what we were supposed to do. I will regret that until I see you again. Until then, R.I.P Mega.”
For context, AKA was tragically shot dead outside a restaurant in Durban on February 10, 2023. The investigation into his murder is still ongoing.
Burna Boy’s reflection highlights a sense of closure and respect, showing that despite past conflicts, the two artists had reconciled before AKA’s untimely death.
