The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched an inquiry into the actions of players and officials following the tumultuous conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Senegal and hosts Morocco in Rabat.
Sunday’s clash had been fiercely contested but largely under control for most of the match, until late-game controversies involving Senegal sparked widespread disorder.
Senegal’s frustration began when Ismaila Sarr’s goal was disallowed. Shortly afterward, Morocco were awarded a penalty after Real Madrid forward Brahim Díaz fell in the box—a decision confirmed following a VAR review.
The rulings provoked immediate outrage. Senegalese supporters expressed their anger in the stands, while tensions escalated on the pitch and along the sidelines.
Amid the turmoil, Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw appeared to instruct his players to leave the field.
The team temporarily retreated to the tunnel before veteran captain Sadio Mané intervened, encouraging his teammates to return. The stoppage lasted approximately 17 minutes, during which law enforcement officers had to intervene to calm the crowd.
Díaz missed the penalty, taking the match into extra time. Senegal ultimately secured the title with a decisive goal from Pape Gueye, but the late-game chaos overshadowed the tournament’s conclusion.
In a strongly worded statement, CAF said:
“The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) condemns the unacceptable behaviour of certain players and officials during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat.
“CAF strongly rejects any misconduct occurring during matches, especially actions directed against referees or match organisers.
“The confederation is reviewing all available footage and will submit the matter to the relevant authorities for appropriate disciplinary measures against those found culpable.”
The post-match fallout continued as Senegal’s press conference turned tense, with exchanges between journalists and officials escalating before the session was cut short.
CAF’s ongoing investigation will examine footage from the pitch, technical areas, and the stands, with sanctions expected to be announced once the review is completed.
