Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have emerged as the frontrunners to assume the role of caretaker manager at Manchester United until the end of the season, with both former players expected to hold face-to-face discussions with the club’s hierarchy.
Both have prior managerial experience at Old Trafford and are reportedly under serious consideration. Sources suggest that a joint caretaker arrangement is possible, given Carrick’s influential position on Solskjaer’s coaching staff when he succeeded Jose Mourinho in 2018.
Currently, Darren Fletcher, who oversees the Under-18s, is temporarily in charge but will step aside once a caretaker is confirmed. Fletcher is set to lead the first team for the upcoming Premier League match against Burnley on Wednesday night, with a 20:15 GMT kick-off.
Former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is also understood to be among the candidates being considered for the caretaker role.
The vacancy arose after Amorim was dismissed on Monday, ending a turbulent 14-month tenure. Manchester United plan to appoint a permanent manager in the summer, avoiding a rushed long-term decision.
According to a source within the dressing room, players believe the caretaker role could potentially be shared between more than one candidate. Fletcher could also remain in charge until the end of the season if results in the next two matches are positive.
Solskjaer first took over as caretaker in 2018 following Mourinho’s exit, eventually securing the position full-time for three years before leaving in November 2021. Carrick briefly managed the team for three matches after Solskjaer’s departure and has been unemployed since leaving Middlesbrough last June, where he spent two-and-a-half years. Solskjaer, meanwhile, was sacked by Besiktas in August.
Looking ahead, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and former Brighton coach Roberto de Zerbi, now at Marseille, are reportedly early contenders for the permanent managerial position.
Gossip News Now reports that Glasner, who won the FA Cup with Palace last season, declined to comment on the speculation during a press conference on Tuesday, saying:
“I am Crystal Palace manager and it makes no sense for you to ask me any more questions about it.”
