Local contractors operating under the All Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria (AICAN) on Monday held yet another peaceful demonstration at the entrance of the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja, protesting what they described as persistent delays in the settlement of outstanding debts.
The demonstrators obstructed access to the ministry building while chanting solidarity songs and urging the Finance Minister to urgently tackle what they termed an unfair and prolonged refusal to pay for completed projects.
The contractors accused the Federal Government of repeatedly altering its stance on when debts would be settled, stressing that the delays have hindered the completion and commissioning of several infrastructure projects across the country.
They said many projects that had already been completed — and in some cases even formally commissioned — remained unpaid despite government acknowledgement.
This latest demonstration follows earlier protests held last year, during which the contractors pressed for immediate payment of all outstanding sums owed by the Federal Government.
They maintained that even after continuous assurances, the situation has not improved.
In December 2025, President Bola Tinubu set up a committee to examine the contractors’ concerns and verify the backlog of claims owed to them.
In a related development, the Senate also established its own committee and summoned the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, seeking clarification on the circumstances surrounding the alleged refusal or delay in paying the debts.
