The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that the average cost of refilling a 5kg cooking gas cylinder surged from ₦6,395.82 in September to ₦8,081.75 in October 2025 — a sharp 26.36% increase.
The data, released Thursday in Abuja as part of the bureau’s Cooking Gas Price Watch for October, also showed that the price rose by 16.86% year-on-year, up from ₦6,915.69 in October 2024.
State-by-State Breakdown
The report highlighted significant disparities in cooking gas prices across states:
- Borno recorded the highest average price at ₦8,376.44.
- Yobe followed with ₦8,357.98, and Ondo with ₦8,340.30.
- The lowest average price was in Bauchi (₦7,051.54), followed by Ebonyi (₦7,744.99) and Akwa Ibom (₦7,806.31).
Geopolitical Zone Analysis
- North-West: Highest average retail price at ₦8,188.55
- North-Central: ₦8,153.21
- South-South: Lowest at ₦7,956.61
12.5kg Cylinder Prices Also Rise
The cost of refilling a 12.5kg gas cylinder also saw a substantial jump, increasing month-on-month by 15.36% — from ₦16,155.09 in September to ₦18,636.77 in October.
Year-on-year, the price rose 11.37% from ₦16,734.55 in October 2024.
Top-priced states for a 12.5kg refill were:
- Borno — ₦19,391.57
- Yobe — ₦19,339.51
- Ondo — ₦19,289.65
Lowest:
- Ebonyi — ₦17,610.88
- Akwa Ibom — ₦17,783.79
- Anambra
Regionally, the North-East posted the highest average price at ₦18,953.86, followed by the North-West (₦18,861.70), while the South-South recorded the lowest at ₦18,207.65.
Why Prices Increased
Gossip News Now earlier reported that cooking gas prices spiked from ₦1,100 per kg to as high as ₦1,800 per kg across outlets after the PENGASSAN strike began in September.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Dr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, attributed the surge to:
- The industrial action by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) at the Dangote Refinery
- Ongoing maintenance work at the Nigeria LNG Train 4 facility
Both factors disrupted supply and pushed prices upward nationwide.
