The Labour Party (LP) faction led by National Chairman Julius Abure has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action against corruption, warning that no country can make meaningful progress while corruption remains unchecked.
Abure made the appeal in his Christmas message to Nigerians, delivered through a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh.
According to the LP leader, effective governance is impossible in an environment where corruption is allowed to flourish, stressing that confronting the menace must be a top priority for any administration seeking lasting success.
He urged President Tinubu to symbolically use the broom, the emblem of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), to thoroughly cleanse the system of corrupt practices.
Drawing inspiration from biblical teachings, Abure said the life and ministry of Jesus Christ provide a clear example of leadership built on transparency, accountability, and moral courage. He noted that Christ did not shy away from exposing wrongdoing, even among His closest followers.
Abure also encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of the Christmas season to offer prayers for national unity and peace, particularly as the country continues to grapple with serious security challenges.
While acknowledging the sacrifices of security agencies working tirelessly to safeguard lives and property during the festive period, he commended the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other paramilitary organisations for their commitment.
However, the Labour Party leader emphasized that security personnel deserve better welfare packages and institutional support to sustain their effectiveness.
He further cautioned that Nigeria’s development would remain slow unless today’s leaders adopt the values of patriotism, sacrifice, and selfless service demonstrated by the nation’s founding fathers.
Abure cited prominent national figures including Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and Malam Aminu Kano, urging current political leaders to be guided by their legacies.
