Court Declares PDP National Convention in Ibadan Invalid

The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a new turn after a Federal High Court in Ibadan delivered a judgment affecting the party’s recent national gathering.

According to the ruling, the national convention organized in the Oyo State capital on November 15, 2025 cannot be regarded as valid. The court therefore declared the exercise null and void.

In addition to invalidating the convention, the court directed that members of the National Working Committee (NWC) produced from that meeting—led by Tanimu Turaki—should refrain from presenting themselves as national officers of the party.

The judgment also clarified the question of which leadership currently holds legal authority within the party structure.

The court affirmed that the caretaker leadership headed by Mohammed Abdulrahman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains the recognized body responsible for managing the party until a properly organized convention is conducted.

This development represents a significant moment in the PDP’s ongoing internal struggle over leadership and control of its national structure.

For several months, competing factions within the party have been locked in legal battles and political disagreements over who legitimately holds authority at the national level.

Observers say the divisions within the PDP have deepened since the party’s disappointing performance in the 2023 general elections, which triggered debates about leadership direction and internal reforms.

In the wake of the court decision, party officials moved quickly to reassure supporters and members that the situation remained under control.

The PDP leadership indicated that the ruling did not necessarily settle all aspects of the dispute surrounding the Ibadan convention.

According to the party’s interpretation, the court declined to grant a specific legal request—an order of mandamus—linked to the leadership dispute.

Party officials argued that the judge based this decision on a technical legal principle.

Specifically, they explained that granting the requested relief would have required the court to effectively review earlier decisions made by courts of equal authority, something it could not do under the law.

Because of this reasoning, the PDP insisted that the decision should not automatically be interpreted as a final determination on the legality of the convention itself.

Reacting to the development, the party issued a statement urging members to remain calm and avoid unnecessary panic.

The message was conveyed through Ini Ememobong, who serves as the party’s National Publicity Secretary.

He explained that the party had already begun taking legal steps to challenge the decision through the appropriate appellate channels.

According to him, the PDP remains confident that the matter will be addressed through the judicial process.

He also encouraged party supporters to remain united during what he described as a challenging period for the organization.

The statement emphasized the importance of maintaining solidarity within the party while the legal dispute continues.

Commentary and Analysis

The Ibadan court ruling highlights the depth of the PDP’s leadership crisis, which has persisted for years and continues to shape the party’s political trajectory.

Internal disputes over conventions and leadership structures have become common in Nigerian political parties, but the situation within the PDP has been particularly prolonged.

Legal battles often emerge when factions seek judicial backing to legitimize their claims to party leadership.

While courts can clarify procedural issues, such rulings rarely resolve the underlying political rivalries that fuel the disputes.

For the PDP, the current challenge goes beyond the legality of one convention.

The party must also rebuild internal cohesion and redefine its strategy if it hopes to regain political momentum ahead of future elections.

Whether the appeal process alters the outcome of this ruling or not, the episode underscores the urgent need for consensus-building within the party’s ranks.
