Court Gives Green Light for PDP National Convention in Ibadan

The Peoples Democratic Party has received a fresh legal boost after an Oyo State High Court ruled that its planned national convention in Ibadan can go ahead as scheduled on November 15 and 16, 2025. The decision gives the opposition party room to continue preparations for one of its most important internal gatherings.

Justice A. L. Akintola issued the order on Monday after considering an ex parte request brought by Folahan Malomo Adelabi. The ruling effectively reopened the path for the convention, despite an earlier judgment from a Federal High Court in Abuja that had temporarily stopped the process.

That earlier Abuja decision, delivered on Friday, October 31, 2025, had interrupted the party’s convention plans over claims that proper procedures were not followed. The case was initiated by three PDP officials who challenged how the event was being organized and argued that the steps taken by party leaders did not align with the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, and the 1999 Constitution.

Those officials — Austin Nwachukwu of Imo State, Amah Nnanna of Abia State, and Turnah George from the South-South zone — had asked the court to halt the convention entirely. Their position was that the leadership failed to observe due process in putting the event together, making judicial intervention necessary.

Now, with the Oyo ruling in place, the PDP appears to have regained momentum ahead of the gathering, which is expected to produce a new set of national officers for the party. According to Gossip News Now, the latest decision has shifted the balance back in favor of those determined to see the Ibadan convention hold as planned.

Even so, the development does not entirely remove uncertainty. Because the matter has already attracted conflicting legal positions, the possibility of further courtroom battles still hangs over the process. For now, however, the Oyo court’s order has given party organizers the confidence to continue.

The ruling also adds another dramatic twist to the PDP’s wider leadership struggle, which has increasingly moved from internal argument to judicial contest. What should have been a straightforward political convention has now become a test of legal strategy, party discipline, and institutional control.

Commentary and Analysis

This latest judgment is important not just because it revives the convention, but because it shows how deeply legal disputes have become tied to the PDP’s internal affairs. The party’s leadership battle is no longer being fought only through meetings and negotiations, but also through competing court orders that shape the direction of events.

At the same time, the clearance from the Oyo court offers the PDP a temporary opening to push ahead with its plans and project some level of stability. Whether that momentum holds will depend on whether new legal obstacles emerge and how effectively the party manages the tension between its political ambitions and the judicial questions still surrounding the convention.
