Crystal Palace have secured the signing of Wales international Brennan Johnson from Tottenham Hotspur in a club-record £35 million deal. The forward is expected to be included in Palace’s squad for their Premier League clash against Newcastle United on Sunday.
The 24-year-old chose Palace after a successful round of discussions with manager Oliver Glasner, turning down interest from AFC Bournemouth, who had also been keen to recruit him as a potential replacement for Manchester City-linked Antoine Semenyo.
“I’m really excited and really happy,” Johnson said. “Crystal Palace is a great club, one I’ve always admired. It’s the perfect time for me to join and be part of the journey this club is on.”
Johnson has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract and will wear the No. 11 shirt. His transfer surpasses the £27 million paid for Christian Benteke in 2016, making him the most expensive signing in Palace’s history.
The forward joined Spurs from Nottingham Forest in 2023 for £47.5 million and enjoyed a strong spell in North London. He finished as Tottenham’s top scorer last season with 18 goals and seven assists, including a decisive strike in the UEFA Europa League final against Manchester United, ending a 17-year silverware drought for the club. This season, however, Johnson found opportunities limited under Thomas Frank, scoring four times in 22 appearances.
At international level, Johnson has earned 42 senior caps for Wales, scoring seven goals and featuring at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. His talent first caught attention during Nottingham Forest’s 2021/2022 promotion campaign, when he scored 19 goals and was named Championship Young Player of the Season, later hitting double figures in his debut Premier League season.
Palace chairman Steve Parish welcomed the new signing, praising Johnson’s proven track record. “We are delighted to have Brennan at Crystal Palace,” Parish said. “He is an exciting young talent with an excellent record domestically, internationally, and in Europe. Brennan’s arrival strengthens our attack as we compete on multiple fronts, including European competition for the first time.”
Manager Oliver Glasner also expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition. “I’m thrilled Brennan has joined the club. He arrived early in the transfer window, and credit to the club for completing the deal quickly. Brennan will add pace and goalscoring options to our attack, and with the busy schedule ahead, he will be a valuable addition to the squad,” Glasner said.
