Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed that the club would consider selling captain Marc Guehi during the January transfer window if the right offer is tabled, with Manchester City showing keen interest ahead of the deadline.
The 25-year-old defender is entering the final months of his contract and could potentially leave Selhurst Park for free this summer. Last year, Palace rejected a £35 million bid from Liverpool, but the club now faces the challenge of balancing sporting ambitions with financial considerations.
City’s interest has intensified following recent defensive injuries to Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias in their draw with Chelsea, prompting them to explore Guehi as a potential reinforcement.
“I’m not naive,” Glasner told the Athletic and The Times. “If a massive offer comes from City and Marc wants to do it, it will happen.”
Palace are fully aware of the stakes. While Guehi is considered a key figure in the squad, the risk of losing him on a free transfer has shifted the club’s priorities. From this month, the defender can legally sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs.
“If you’re purely looking at the sporting side, everyone will agree Marc should stay,” Glasner added. “The chairman feels the same. But it’s not one-dimensional. The financial situation is very important.
“There comes a point when the club has to weigh the financial issue above the sporting one. The final decision always lies with the player if he decides he wants to leave.”
Guehi has been central to one of Palace’s most successful periods. He captained the team to a 12th-place finish last season, lifted the FA Cup, and secured European qualification for the first time. The Eagles followed that by winning the Community Shield in August, defeating Premier League champions Liverpool on penalties.
This season, Palace are 14th in the Premier League and have advanced to the knockout play-off stage of the UEFA Conference League.
“The chairman rejected many offers in the summer because we wanted a successful season and the Community Shield,” Glasner explained. “Marc is important, and at that time, the money offered didn’t exceed our threshold. Maybe it was close, but not enough.”
Interest in Guehi across Europe remains strong. Clubs such as Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Atletico Madrid have been linked with a potential free transfer this summer.
However, according to German journalist Christian Falk, Bayern are not expected to make a move in January, as their priority is currently on extending Dayot Upamecano’s contract, which is nearing its end.
