The cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), widely known as cooking gas, has once again surged across Nigeria, with some retail outlets now selling at between ₦1,250 and ₦1,300 per kilogram.
This marks a sharp rise from the ₦1,050 per kg recorded just last week, further straining households already burdened by rising living expenses.
Earlier, Naija News reported that the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bayo Ojulari, attributed the recent price instability to the strike action by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
Ojulari, who spoke with State House correspondents after meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Sunday, October 5, explained that the strike disrupted loading and distribution activities for several days, leading to an artificial spike in market prices.
The increase is particularly notable given that the Dangote Refinery recently reduced its ex-depot price of LPG by ₦50, lowering the rate from ₦810 per kilogram to ₦760 per kilogram. However, this price cut has yet to reflect in the retail market, as consumers continue to pay far higher rates.
Based on the current average market price of ₦1,250 per kilogram, the estimated cost of refilling common cylinder sizes is as follows:
- 1kg – ₦1,250
- 3kg – ₦3,750
- 5kg – ₦6,250
- 10kg – ₦12,500
- 12kg – ₦15,000
- 12.5kg – ₦15,625
