Norwegian football club Molde FK has confirmed that Nigerian midfielder Daniel Daga is facing a legal case in Norway, prompting the club to temporarily remove him from all football activities while the matter proceeds through the courts.
The development emerged after authorities formally charged the 18-year-old player with a sexual conduct offence. However, Daga has firmly denied any wrongdoing, insisting that the interaction at the centre of the case was consensual.
Speaking through his lawyer, Astrid Bolstad, the young footballer acknowledged that a sexual encounter took place but rejected any suggestion that it involved criminal behaviour. His legal team also clarified that the allegations do not include claims of violence or threats.
Molde FK addressed the situation publicly, explaining that the player has been cooperating with investigators since the issue first surfaced in April 2025.
According to the club, Daga participated in interviews with law enforcement officials and responded to requests from the police as the investigation progressed.
Following consultations with Molde’s management, the midfielder travelled back to Nigeria but is expected to return to Norway when the case moves forward in court.
Club chairman Odd Ivar Moen described the matter as extremely serious and acknowledged the difficulty it creates for everyone connected to the situation.
He noted that cases of this nature place emotional and professional pressure not only on the athlete involved but also on the club and those around it.
Molde also indicated that it has remained in contact with the legal representatives of the woman connected to the case, recognising the broader impact such disputes can have.
Reports from Norwegian media suggest the legal proceedings are scheduled to begin at the Nordmøre and Romsdal District Court in March 2026.
While the legal process unfolds, the club has chosen to suspend Daga from all team activities. This means the midfielder will not participate in training sessions, matches, or other football-related duties until the matter is resolved.
Daga’s Football Career So Far
Before the controversy emerged, Daga had begun establishing himself at Molde after joining the club ahead of the 2025 season.
During that period, he featured in several matches for the Norwegian side, including appearances in domestic competitions and the UEFA Europa Conference League.
Internationally, the midfielder also represented Nigeria with the Flying Eagles, taking part in the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Nigeria’s campaign in the tournament ended in the round of sixteen following a heavy defeat to Argentina.
Commentary and Analysis
Cases involving professional athletes and criminal allegations often create complex situations for clubs and governing bodies. Teams must balance legal fairness with the need to protect their institutional reputation.
Molde’s decision to suspend Daga while legal proceedings continue reflects a common approach taken by sports organizations when players face serious accusations.
For the player, the upcoming court hearing will be a crucial moment that could shape both his legal standing and football career.
Young athletes like Daga often face intense scrutiny when controversies arise, particularly when their careers are still developing on the international stage.
Until the court reaches a conclusion, both the player and the club appear to be adopting a cautious approach while allowing the legal process to run its course.
