Reality television personality and comedian Aderombi Adedayo, widely known as DeeOne, has publicly addressed an invitation he received from the Nigeria Police Force following a video he posted online concerning President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to Turkey.
The former Big Brother Naija housemate disclosed the development on Thursday through his social media platforms. To confirm the situation, he shared a photograph of the official police letter notifying him of the invitation.
According to the document, the request came from the Force Intelligence Department (FID). The letter instructed him to appear at the FID Annex Office in Lagos through the OCCIOS unit for what authorities described as a routine interview connected to an ongoing investigation.
While the police invitation did not publicly specify the exact issue under review, DeeOne suggested that the summons may be linked to a video he recently shared online about President Tinubu during the official trip to Turkey.
In his explanation to followers, the comedian said the video simply reflected his personal observations about something he considered unusual during the visit. He emphasized that his remarks were made as an ordinary citizen expressing an opinion.
The online personality revealed that since the video circulated, he has received several reactions from the public. According to him, some individuals accused him of engaging in cyberbullying or claimed he should not have mentioned the president or members of his family in the discussion.
Despite the criticisms, DeeOne insisted he does not regret sharing the video. He maintained that he exercised his right to express his views on matters of public interest.
The comedian also made it clear that he has no intention of apologizing if the police inquiry turns out to be related to the video. In his words, he believes expressing opinions about national issues should not automatically attract legal consequences.
However, DeeOne said he intends to cooperate with the authorities by honoring the police invitation. He confirmed that he plans to appear at the designated office on Monday for the scheduled interview.
He also promised to inform the public about the outcome of the meeting once the interaction with the police is concluded.
Public Reactions and Online Debate
The situation has sparked discussions across social media, with users expressing varying opinions about the incident. Some commentators argue that public figures should exercise caution when discussing political matters online, especially when the topics involve national leaders.
Others, however, believe that citizens—including entertainers and influencers—have the right to voice their opinions on political developments without fear of intimidation.
The debate reflects a broader conversation in Nigeria about freedom of expression in the digital age and the responsibilities that come with online commentary.
Commentary and Analysis
The invitation extended to DeeOne highlights the growing intersection between social media discourse and law enforcement oversight. As public conversations increasingly move to digital platforms, authorities sometimes intervene when content is perceived to cross legal or ethical boundaries.
At the same time, the case underscores ongoing tensions surrounding freedom of speech and the role of influencers in shaping political conversations. With millions of Nigerians actively participating in online debates, determining the line between legitimate criticism and offensive commentary remains a complex challenge.
For public personalities like DeeOne, the situation serves as a reminder that online expression can carry real-world consequences. Whether the matter ends as a routine clarification or escalates further will likely depend on the outcome of the police inquiry.
