Political discussions in Kano State have intensified following reports suggesting that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf could consider joining the All Progressives Congress.
Reacting to the growing speculation, the state chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Abbas, said the party would gladly welcome the governor if he eventually decides to switch political allegiance.
According to Abbas, the invitation was extended in consultation with the party’s former national chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
He explained that the APC leadership in the state believes collaboration among political actors could help strengthen governance and accelerate development.
The chairman emphasized that the party remains open to dialogue and reconciliation with other political stakeholders in Kano.
In his words, bringing influential leaders together under one political platform could foster unity and improve efforts aimed at advancing the interests of the state.
However, the development has triggered a sharp reaction from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, the platform on which Governor Yusuf currently serves.
Addressing journalists during a press briefing, NNPP chairman in the state, Suleiman Dungurawa, rejected the idea of a possible defection.
Dungurawa insisted that the APC does not enjoy widespread public support in Kano, warning that any move in that direction could contradict the expectations of voters.
He also dismissed claims that internal disagreements were developing between Governor Yusuf and the party’s national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
According to him, the relationship between the governor and Kwankwaso remains intact and aligned with the political principles of the NNPP.
Dungurawa further urged residents of Kano to remain calm despite the ongoing rumours surrounding the governor’s political future.
He cautioned party members to ignore documents allegedly circulating online that claim to represent the views of the NNPP leadership.
The chairman described such materials as the work of individuals attempting to create confusion and political tension within the party.
Commentary and Analysis
The debate over possible political defections in Kano reflects the broader dynamics of Nigeria’s party system, where alliances and alignments often shift ahead of major elections.
Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states, meaning that any change in the governor’s party affiliation could have far-reaching implications for regional and national politics.
Observers note that the NNPP’s strong support base in Kano, largely associated with Rabiu Kwankwaso’s political movement, has played a decisive role in recent electoral outcomes.
At the same time, the APC continues to maintain a significant presence in the state through influential figures such as Abdullahi Ganduje.
As speculation continues, analysts believe that political stability in Kano will depend largely on how party leaders manage internal tensions and maintain unity among their supporters.
