Defectors Fleeing Other Parties Find Refuge in ADC, Says Spokesman

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has revealed that a growing number of politicians leaving other political parties are now finding a new political base within its platform.

According to the party, individuals from different political groups—including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP)—have begun moving toward ADC as internal disputes weaken their former organizations.

ADC Describes New Members as “Political Refugees”

Speaking on the situation, the party’s National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi described many of the defectors as politicians seeking stability after experiencing conflicts within their previous parties.

He explained that internal divisions and leadership struggles in other parties have forced several members to search for an alternative political environment.

In his words, ADC has become a kind of political shelter for those who feel displaced in their former political homes.

Party Structure Designed to Prevent Domination

Abdullahi noted that ADC’s internal structure was intentionally designed to prevent the concentration of power in the hands of one individual or faction.

According to him, the party’s constitution contains safeguards that ensure no single figure can dominate the organisation.

He said the approach was adopted after observing how unchecked power struggles have weakened several political parties across Nigeria.

Lessons From Political Conflicts Elsewhere

The ADC spokesman argued that the party has been studying the crises that have affected rival political platforms.

He suggested that many political parties collapse into internal disputes when personal ambitions overshadow collective party discipline.

To avoid repeating such patterns, the ADC leadership says it is prioritising unity and internal stability.

Ambitions Within the Party Kept Under Control

One example of the party’s approach, Abdullahi explained, is the absence of public declarations for major political offices.

He pointed out that no member has formally announced intentions to contest positions such as:

  • Governor
  • Senator
  • President

While discussions about potential ambitions may exist informally, the party insists that official declarations are being deliberately postponed.

Focus on Building Strong Foundations

According to the ADC leadership, the immediate priority is to strengthen the party’s internal structure before focusing on individual political ambitions.

Abdullahi stated that once the party becomes more firmly established, it will be better positioned to accommodate members’ aspirations for elective offices.

He emphasised that the current goal is to build a credible organisation capable of competing effectively in future elections.

Position on Zoning and Power Rotation

Addressing questions about power zoning within the party, Abdullahi clarified that the issue is not currently a major topic of discussion.

Instead, the party is concentrating on building public trust and expanding its political presence across the country.

He suggested that debates about zoning may become relevant later, once the party’s structure has matured.

ADC’s Long-Term Strategy

The party also indicated that it intends to remain cautious about potential external influences that could destabilise its internal system.

ADC leaders believe that maintaining discipline and unity will help the party grow steadily while avoiding the crises that have plagued other platforms.

Commentary and Analysis

The influx of politicians into the ADC reflects a broader trend in Nigerian politics, where internal disagreements often trigger waves of defections between parties.

Political realignments frequently occur when factions within established parties clash over leadership, ideology, or access to power.

For smaller or emerging parties like the ADC, such movements can present opportunities to expand membership and increase national visibility.

However, managing a diverse group of newcomers also poses challenges. Integrating politicians with different backgrounds and ambitions requires strong internal governance structures to prevent the same conflicts that drove them away from their previous parties.

Whether the ADC can maintain the disciplined structure it describes will likely play a major role in determining its influence in future Nigerian elections.
