The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it is currently accommodating “political refugees” from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and other political parties.
National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi explained that these defectors often come from destabilized parties, sidelined or displaced due to internal conflicts.
Speaking to reporters, Abdullahi highlighted that ADC’s constitution prevents any individual or group from dominating the party—a safeguard designed to avoid the pitfalls seen in other political platforms.
He stated, “We are fully aware of what has pushed people to seek refuge in ADC—internal contradictions within their former parties. That is why we are building ADC on a different philosophy of politics. We have leaders, yes, but no one controls the party entirely.
“We are mindful of the lessons from the destabilization of other political parties and are ensuring that ambition does not override party discipline.”
Abdullahi noted that unchecked personal ambition has historically undermined many parties. In contrast, ADC has avoided such challenges, with no member publicly declaring intentions for governorship, Senate, or the presidency.
“Even presidential ambitions remain mere speculation. Nobody has formally declared a bid. This discipline is essential for building a strong party first. Once that foundation is in place, the party can accommodate everyone’s aspirations,” he said.
He stressed that ADC aims to maintain strong internal unity while remaining vigilant against external interference, ensuring steady growth capable of supporting members’ future ambitions.
On the issue of zoning, Abdullahi clarified that it is not currently on the party’s agenda. The immediate priority for the opposition platform is to build a credible party that Nigerians can trust.
