Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has denied allegations that the National Assembly is intentionally delaying amendments to the Electoral Act 2022.
The claim was made by 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who, in a post on his 𝕏 handle, accused the National Assembly of stalling the amendment process. Atiku argued that loopholes in the current law contributed to electoral malpractice in 2023 and warned that further delays could undermine the credibility of the 2027 elections.
However, speaking with journalists on Friday at his country home in Bende, Abia State, Kalu rejected Atiku’s assertion.
“The National Assembly is not delaying the amendment of the Electoral Act. It is untrue that the Parliament, especially the House of Representatives, is deliberately stalling the process,” Kalu said.
He explained that the House of Representatives has already completed substantial work to address gaps in the law and is now awaiting the Senate’s action to finalize the concurrent legislative process. Kalu expressed optimism that the Senate would soon conclude its review.
