The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been dealt a blow ahead of the knockout rounds of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with striker Cyriel Dessers sidelined due to a thigh injury.

Dessers sustained the injury during training and will not feature again in Nigeria’s campaign in Morocco. Team media officer Promise Efoghe confirmed on Friday that the forward has returned to his club in Greece for treatment, ending his hopes of making an appearance in the tournament.

The absence of Dessers further limits Nigeria’s attacking options as the competition enters its critical stages. Dessers, formerly of Rangers, had yet to play for the Super Eagles in the ongoing AFCON.

Other squad concerns were also noted during Friday’s session. Right-back Ryan Alebiosu attended training but did not participate as he continues his recovery from a leg injury sustained against Uganda earlier in the week. Midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi, who plays for Zulte Waregem in Belgium, missed the session after falling ill.

Despite these setbacks, head coach Eric Chelle is keeping the team focused on the task ahead. Nigeria now turn their attention to the Round of 16 clash against Mozambique’s Mambas, set for 8 p.m. on Monday, January 5, in Fès.

Efoghe said, “Twenty-five players trained on Friday evening. Ryan Alebiosu was present but did not take part as he recovers from his leg injury. A thigh injury has ruled Cyriel Dessers out, and he has returned to his club. Tochukwu Nnadi missed training due to a cold. Coach Eric Chelle has instructed the players to put the group stage successes behind them and focus fully on the knockout phase.”
