A fresh controversy has emerged involving Nigerian media personality Oladotun Ojuolape Kayode, who has publicly accused officials linked to the United States Embassy in Nigeria of enabling what he describes as an unlawful relocation of his children abroad.
The broadcaster’s claims center on a long-running marital dispute with his estranged spouse, Taiwo Oyebanjo, which dates back several years. Court proceedings reportedly began after Taiwo initiated divorce proceedings in 2021, citing serious allegations against her husband. Dotun has repeatedly denied the accusations.
Beyond the breakdown of the marriage itself, the conflict soon evolved into a contentious custody battle over their two daughters. Dotun has maintained that he faced deliberate obstacles in trying to maintain access to the children, accusing his former partner and members of her family of restricting contact.
According to Gossip News Now recalls that, the situation escalated when the children were reportedly taken out of Nigeria and relocated to the United States several years ago. Dotun claims this happened while a custody dispute and divorce proceedings were still ongoing before the Federal High Court of Nigeria.
The radio host alleges that the children’s travel occurred despite existing legal restrictions. He insists that he had possession of the girls’ original travel documents and that a court directive had prevented their removal from the country during the ongoing legal process.
Dotun further argued that the embassy’s procedures should have required the approval of both parents before travel documents or visas could be processed for minors. In his view, such safeguards were either ignored or improperly handled in this case.
He also raised concerns about the involvement of former U.S. Consular General Mary Beth Leonard, claiming that the diplomatic process was flawed and unfairly favored his estranged spouse.
During a strongly worded statement posted online, Dotun expressed frustration over what he believes was a failure to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the children’s travel. He questioned how strict consent requirements could have been bypassed if the procedures were properly followed.
In his message, the media personality demanded clarity from the embassy. He called on the diplomatic mission either to help facilitate the return of his daughters or to publicly explain the process that led to their relocation.
Commentary and Analysis
International custody disputes are often among the most complicated legal conflicts because they involve multiple legal jurisdictions. When children are taken from one country to another during a custody dispute, the issue can fall under international family law frameworks and diplomatic procedures.
Cases like Dotun’s also raise questions about how embassies verify parental consent when issuing travel documents for minors. While diplomatic missions typically follow strict guidelines, disputes sometimes arise when one parent believes those rules were not properly applied.
Public accusations against diplomatic institutions are rare and can attract widespread attention, particularly when made by a well-known public figure. Such disputes often require careful legal examination, involving both domestic courts and international legal mechanisms.
For Dotun, the matter appears to be deeply personal, reflecting the emotional strain that accompanies prolonged custody conflicts. Regardless of the eventual legal outcome, the case highlights the difficulties parents can face when family disputes cross international borders.
