Eddie Hearn Sparks Retirement Rumours as He Pleads for Privacy Following Anthony Joshua’s Tragic Loss

Anthony Joshua’s long-time promoter, Eddie Hearn, has fueled retirement rumors surrounding the former heavyweight champion following a tragic accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s closest companions. The devastating incident appears to have shifted Joshua’s priorities away from boxing.

In an interview with talkSPORT Boxing, Hearn emphasized that the 36-year-old boxer currently needs space to grieve. “He needs privacy and time right now, so there will be no statements about his career, next fights, or anything related to boxing,” Hearn said. He continued, “He needs to heal, mentally and physically. There’s nothing to talk about at this point. Let him be. Let’s just pray for him and the families affected by this terrible incident.”

Though Hearn stopped short of formally confirming a retirement, members of Joshua’s family suggest the decision may already have been made. Adedamola Joshua, the boxer’s uncle, told The Punch that the champion had informed the family of his choice to step away from the sport. “The most important thing is that he has retired from boxing. That alone gives us peace,” he explained, highlighting the emotional strain the family endured with each fight.

The Tragedy That Changed Everything

The December 29 crash on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway took the lives of Joshua’s friends Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Reports indicate that the vehicle, a black Lexus SUV driven by 46-year-old Adeniyi Kayode, collided with the rear of a stationary truck transporting soya beans. Both Joshua and Kayode survived, but the tragedy has left an indelible impact on the former champion.

Joshua paid tribute on 𝕏, expressing his grief and reflecting on his friends’ significance in his life. “100% it’s tough for me, but tougher for their parents. I have a strong mind, and I believe God knows their hearts. May God have mercy on my brothers,” he wrote. The post showcased the depth of his emotional struggle and the bond he shared with those lost.

Further insight came from a now-deleted video shared by UFC fighter Kamaru Usman, in which Joshua recounted the accident while recovering. “Two of my close friends passed away. One was in the front and the other behind him on the right side. They both died. It still hasn’t sunk in. It hasn’t hit me yet,” Joshua said, emphasizing the trauma he continues to process.

Legal Proceedings and Memorials

Adeniyi Kayode has been charged with dangerous and reckless driving, driving without a license, and causing death by negligence. The Sagamu magistrate’s court granted him bail of ₦5 million, with the case adjourned to January 20. Meanwhile, funeral prayers for Ghami and Ayodele were held on January 4 at the London Central Mosque, providing a moment for friends, family, and the boxing community to honor the deceased.

Both Latif Ayodele, known as Healthy Mindset, and Sina Ghami were integral to Joshua’s training environment. Ayodele served as a long-term training partner, while Ghami was part of Joshua’s corner team during his December 19 victory over Jake Paul in Miami. Their loss not only represents a personal blow to Joshua but also a disruption to his professional support system.

Analysis: A Pivotal Moment in Joshua’s Career

Joshua’s potential retirement marks a turning point, raising questions about the future of one of boxing’s most prominent figures. Hearn’s insistence on privacy underscores the emotional toll the accident has taken, suggesting that Joshua’s priorities may now lie in personal healing rather than professional accolades. Should Joshua formally step away, the heavyweight division would face a significant shift in its competitive landscape.

Whether the Super Champion returns to the ring or chooses to retire, the boxing world remains attentive. Fans and analysts alike recognize that the trauma and loss he has endured could define his legacy as much as his victories.
