Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has moved to shut down rumours linking him with the vacant Manchester United job, stressing that he is happy at St James’ Park and has no intention of seeking a move elsewhere.
Speculation intensified following Manchester United’s decision to part ways with Ruben Amorim on Monday, but Howe was quick to reject suggestions that he could be tempted away from Tyneside.
“No, not at this moment,” Howe said when asked if anything might draw him away from Newcastle.
“For me, what matters most is being happy in the role, enjoying the job, and having strong relationships with the people around me.
“That hasn’t always been consistent throughout my career. Things can change at any club, but right now, I’m very happy.”
Howe has been in charge of Newcastle since November 2021 and is among the longest-serving managers in the Premier League. Only Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta, and Marco Silva have spent longer in their current positions.
His tenure at the club has included some internal challenges. Last summer, tensions arose with former sporting director Paul Mitchell, who exited the club after less than a year. Since then, Howe has developed a productive working relationship with Mitchell’s successor, Ross Wilson.
Wilson is the third sporting director Howe has worked alongside at Newcastle, while David Hopkinson is the second chief executive he has served under following Darren Eales’ departure due to health reasons.
Despite the changes behind the scenes, Howe emphasized that his attention remains firmly on his responsibilities in an environment where he feels trusted and supported.
“I’m settled here as long as I can express myself fully and be the best version of myself,” he said.
On the field, Newcastle currently sit ninth in the Premier League, just two points shy of fifth place. They have also progressed to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and are well positioned for a Champions League last-16 play-off spot.
Howe continues to enjoy the backing of the club’s majority owners, the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, as well as minority shareholder Jamie Reuben.
“For any football club to succeed, there needs to be unity from top to bottom,” Howe added. “Everyone has to be pulling in the same direction.
“I’ve always had an excellent relationship with the board, and that hasn’t changed.
“I feel very fortunate to have that level of trust and support because not many managers get the time to build those connections.
“Mutual confidence and trust are vital, and I hope that continues for a long time.”
