Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has called for the resignation of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Frank expressed worry that the anti-corruption agency had effectively become an extension of the ruling APC.
He argued that under Olukoyede’s leadership, the EFCC had acted outside its legal mandate, allegedly engaging in selective investigations and politically motivated actions that have brought “shame and loss of credibility” to the institution.
Frank claimed that the once-clear distinction between an autonomous anti-graft body and the ruling party’s political machinery had faded, accusing the EFCC of facilitating political deals rather than pursuing corruption cases objectively.
To back his assertions, he cited several notable cases, beginning with that of former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.
According to him, Okowa faced intense scrutiny while in the opposition, but interest in the case diminished after he reportedly met with EFCC officials and later defected to the APC. Frank further alleged that Okowa was subsequently appointed a “Renewed Hope Ambassador.”
He also alleged that individuals facing serious corruption accusations were being compensated with government positions under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Frank claimed that confiscated properties had been returned quietly to some suspects who aligned themselves with the ruling party, accusing the EFCC of functioning more like a go-between than a prosecutorial agency.
He stated, “We have sadly reached a point where one can hardly distinguish a statutory anti-graft institution from one operating in the service of the ruling party.
“People accused of plundering public funds are now being rewarded with prominent appointments, in clear collaboration with a commission that behaves more like a mediator than a prosecutor.”
