EFCC Clarifies Delay in Prosecuting High-Profile Corruption Cases

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified why certain high-profile corruption cases appear delayed, attributing the lag primarily to the extensive process of collecting credible and admissible evidence.

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede told Channels Television’s Sunday Politics that investigations involving politically exposed persons or substantial public funds require careful tracing of assets, sometimes spanning multiple countries. He emphasized that rushing such cases risks weak prosecution and judicial setbacks.

Drawing a contrast, Olukoyede noted that cybercrime investigations can be completed quickly. “In 48 hours, I can investigate and arraign a cybercriminal. It’s mostly about securing the devices,” he explained. But, he stressed, “with politically-exposed persons or major corruption cases, it takes time. I cannot take a case to court unless I am fully prepared.”

He underscored that longer timelines do not imply inactivity or preferential treatment. Allegations suggesting that the EFCC shields powerful individuals while targeting opposition members were dismissed as unfounded. “This commission does not operate on political bias,” Olukoyede said.

Specifically addressing claims from former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, about political persecution, the chairman emphasized impartiality. “Let me be clear, there is nothing personal in this matter regarding the former attorney-general,” he said, reinforcing that anti-corruption efforts are meant to be non-partisan.

The Complexity of High-Profile Investigations

Olukoyede highlighted the practical challenges involved in prosecuting cases tied to large-scale corruption. Unlike straightforward crimes, these cases often involve:

Tracing financial transactions across multiple jurisdictions.
Identifying and securing documentary and digital evidence.
Coordinating with foreign agencies to access frozen or hidden assets.

He explained that these factors significantly extend the investigative process, a reality often misunderstood by the public.

Observers note that understanding the EFCC’s operational constraints is key to maintaining public confidence. Rapid prosecution of minor crimes is achievable, but high-stakes corruption requires diligence to avoid legal loopholes. Olukoyede concluded by stressing the importance of political neutrality in the anti-corruption campaign. “If Nigeria is to move forward, everyone must agree that this fight must be conducted without partisanship. That is what I want Nigerians to understand and support,” he said.
