Preparations for the upcoming international friendly between Egypt national football team and the Nigeria national football team are facing uncertainty as Egyptian officials await decisions from English Premier League clubs regarding key players.
The Egyptian Football Association has reportedly contacted both Liverpool F.C. and Manchester City F.C. to request the release of star attackers Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush.
The friendly, scheduled to take place at Cairo International Stadium on December 14, forms part of Egypt’s preparations for the next Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted in Morocco.
According to Gossip News Now reports that, Egyptian head coach Hossam Hassan has urged the country’s football leadership to intensify communication with the players’ clubs.
As part of these efforts, the EFA president Hani Abu Rida has personally reached out to both Premier League teams to discuss the possibility of releasing the players for international duty.
However, the situation remains unresolved as neither Liverpool nor Manchester City has issued a final decision regarding the request.
The delay is believed to be linked to the demanding December fixture calendar in England. Liverpool are scheduled to face Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. on December 13, just a day before the planned international match.
Manchester City also face a tight schedule, as they are set to play Crystal Palace F.C. around the same time as the Egypt–Nigeria encounter.
Nigeria could encounter similar complications when assembling its squad. Several members of the Super Eagles play in the Premier League and may face scheduling conflicts with their clubs.
For example, Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey could be unavailable if their club Fulham F.C. proceeds with its match against Burnley F.C. on December 13.
Similarly, Tolu Arokodare may face scheduling issues if his club Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. continues with its fixture against Arsenal F.C. that same day.
Another potential absence is Frank Onyeka, whose club Brentford F.C. are expected to face Leeds United F.C. on December 14.
Commentary and Analysis
Friendly matches scheduled outside FIFA international windows often create logistical challenges for national teams. Clubs are not obligated to release players, especially when domestic competitions are ongoing.
For Egypt, the possible absence of Mohamed Salah would significantly affect preparations, as he remains one of the team’s most influential players and a central figure in their attacking system.
Nigeria may face similar difficulties if several of their Premier League-based players are unavailable. This could force both teams to rely more heavily on players from other European leagues or domestic competitions.
Despite these uncertainties, the fixture remains important for both nations as they prepare for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. The match offers an opportunity to test tactics, evaluate squad depth, and build momentum ahead of the continental tournament.
