The political scene in the South is shifting as former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with reports indicating that at least eight federal lawmakers are preparing to follow him.
Obi, who previously served as Governor of Anambra State, formalized his defection to the ADC during a ceremony in Enugu on Wednesday. During the event, he urged Nigerians and opposition figures to unite under a broad coalition to address what he described as the nation’s ongoing challenges of poverty, disunity, and democratic decay.
Explaining his decision to leave the Labour Party, Obi emphasized that the move was driven by patriotism and the national interest.
“This decision is guided solely by patriotism and national interest. I now respectfully call on my political associates, the Obidient Movement, and opposition leaders across the country to join this broad national coalition under the African Democratic Congress. History will not forgive silence in moments of national peril,” he stated.
Obi’s verified 𝕏 account highlighted the presence of several political heavyweights at the ceremony, including Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, and Gilbert Nnaji. Also attending were High Chief Ben Obi, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, Prof. Pat Utomi, Prof. Osita Ogbu, and Chief Ralph Nwosu.
Sunday Punch reports that the eight federal lawmakers expected to align with Obi include three senators and five House of Representatives members from Anambra State who have exited the Labour Party.
The five House members are Afamefuna Ogene (Ogbaru Federal Constituency), Oby Orogbu (Awka North/Awka South), Harris Okonkwo (Idemili North/Idemili South), Emeka Godwin (Onitsha North/Onitsha South), and George Ozodinobi (Dunukofia/Njikoka/Anaocha). Their defections are yet to be formally announced on the floor of the National Assembly.
Commenting on Obi’s political realignment, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, told Sunday Punch that the former presidential candidate’s entry had significantly energized the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Obi’s defection has given traction to the ADC, and we are expecting more quality politicians like him to join us. Others should make up their minds on time. Discussions are ongoing with other lawmakers and political figures, and the engagement has been positive. We expect more to follow in the coming weeks,” he said.
