Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has clarified that he is not currently pursuing any elective position, though he stopped short of permanently ruling out a future bid. Speaking during an interview on BBC Hausa, he said his immediate political priority lies elsewhere.

Rather than declaring an ambition for office, El-Rufai stated that his energy is now directed toward unseating the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. He acknowledged playing a role in the emergence of the current government but argued that disappointment with its performance has compelled him to take an opposing stance.

According to him, political dynamics are fluid and can change rapidly, making it impossible to predict what the future may hold. For now, he maintains that the broader struggle is about offering Nigerians an alternative direction. He suggested that those in power remain wary of his influence because they understand his political capacity.

Despite his criticism of the administration, El-Rufai insisted that his disagreement with President Tinubu is not rooted in personal hostility. He explained that their divergence stems from differing objectives, emphasizing that political partnerships can dissolve when visions no longer align. In his words, when goals are no longer shared, it is better for each side to proceed independently without animosity.

He further clarified that he and Tinubu did not share a longstanding political history prior to their collaboration within the All Progressives Congress during the Muhammadu Buhari era. That cooperation, he noted, was built around a common cause at the time.

Addressing speculation about tension with his successor, Uba Sani, El-Rufai dismissed claims of a fallout. He described Uba Sani as a political protégé and reiterated that any perceived strain relates to policy direction rather than personal conflict.

On the broader opposition movement, El-Rufai acknowledged that he previously stood against some figures now associated with an emerging coalition. However, he argued that present circumstances demand reconciliation and collective action. In his view, political disagreements are part of the process, and alliances can shift when national interests are at stake.

Concluding his remarks, he stressed that politics should not be reduced to personal grudges. He maintained that the central objective remains addressing hardship, unemployment, and governance challenges facing Nigerians, asserting that unity among opposition forces will be essential in the years ahead.
