Emmanuel Babayaro Defends Iwobi Criticises Critics After Tanzania Performance

Former Nigeria international, Emmanuel Babayaro, has come to the defence of Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi, condemning what he described as unfair criticism from fans and pundits.

Babayaro highlighted Iwobi’s pivotal role in Coach Eric Chelle’s squad, insisting that the Fulham star continues to be one of Nigeria’s most influential players despite the negative attention.

Speaking on the ATHLST podcast, Babayaro praised Iwobi’s performance in Nigeria’s recent 2-1 victory over Tanzania, calling him the engine of the team.

“I have heard so many nasty things about this young man, talking about Iwobi. I was fascinated,” Babayaro said. “In my book, he was my Man of the Match against Tanzania. Semi Ajayi was also impressive, but that goal gave Iwobi the edge. Iwobi has not been dealt with fairly in my opinion.”

The England-born midfielder, who previously played for Arsenal, has been a consistent presence in the Super Eagles for several years and is currently the only active player in the squad with over 80 caps.

Iwobi is expected to feature again as Nigeria takes on Tunisia in their second Group C match at 9:00 p.m. tonight, with fans and pundits eager to see if he can continue his influential form.
