Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has urged citizens to disregard recent political claims from former governors, describing them as distractions driven by personal ambition rather than genuine concern for the state.
Speaking on Saturday during the dedication of a new Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Umuoriehi, Umuahia North Local Government Area, Otti responded to reports suggesting that former governors Orji Uzor Kalu, Theodore Orji, and Okezie Ikpeazu are allegedly plotting to block his re-election.
“These are the same individuals who had every opportunity to transform Abia but didn’t,” Otti remarked, emphasizing that their current alliance is rooted in self-interest rather than the welfare of Abia citizens.
He further reassured residents that the purported coalition against him represents a small minority unlikely to alter the state’s trajectory.
“God doesn’t make mistakes, and He doesn’t abandon His projects,” Otti declared, assuring the congregation that his administration remains steadfast in its mission to bring meaningful development.
Ignoring the Noise
Referencing earlier comments by the church’s pastor, Otti encouraged people to remain focused despite the swirling political chatter.
“Pastor Uguru mentioned the noise some of you may have heard in the last few days. I want us to simply wave it aside. It’s just noise—and as you know, it’s the empty barrels that make the loudest noise,” the governor explained.
By framing the opposition’s actions as loud yet empty, Otti sought to minimize the psychological impact of political maneuvering on his supporters.
Commitment to Development
Beyond responding to opposition claims, the governor underscored the ongoing work of his administration, emphasizing that political distractions would not deter progress.
“Our mission is to transform governance in Abia State. We remain committed to the people, and nothing will divert us from our objectives,” Otti affirmed.
He called on residents to remain united, patient, and supportive of reforms currently underway, highlighting the importance of civic cooperation in achieving sustainable growth.
Commentary
Analysts suggest that Otti’s approach is strategically calculated: by publicly dismissing opposition noise while focusing on tangible development projects, he reinforces his leadership legitimacy and consolidates grassroots support. His metaphor of “empty barrels” serves both as a rhetorical flourish and a political tactic, framing critics as ineffective while rallying his base around a message of divine providence and continuity in governance. Observers note that in politically charged states like Abia, the perception of control and stability often weighs as heavily on public opinion as actual policy outcomes.
