Michael Carrick could not have hoped for a more memorable debut as Manchester United manager, as his side delivered a composed and clinical 2-0 victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Gossip News Now  reported that United confirmed on Tuesday that Carrick would remain in charge until the end of the season following the departure of Ruben Amorim.

The announcement received mixed reactions across the footballing world, but Carrick wasted no time in making an impact, guiding United to a derby win that boosted the spirits of the Old Trafford faithful.

Facing a City team renowned for dominating possession, United executed a disciplined strategy, absorbing pressure before striking decisively. While City controlled the ball for large periods, Carrick’s side was sharper in the key moments.

The first half ended 0-0, though there was plenty of action. United had two goals disallowed, while referee Anthony Taylor issued several yellow cards, including bookings for Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot. City’s Rodri was also cautioned just before halftime as tensions flared.

The deadlock was broken in the 65th minute. Bruno Fernandes played a clever pass to Bryan Mbeumo, who kept his composure and finished past the goalkeeper, sending the home crowd into celebration. The goal reflected United’s game plan: patient in buildup, lethal in the final third.

City tried to respond, with Pep Guardiola making substitutions and withdrawing Erling Haaland, who appeared frustrated as he left the field. Yet United maintained control and doubled their lead 11 minutes later. Patrick Dorgu advanced from defence and calmly finished after a precise assist from Matheus Cunha, making it 2-0.

Carrick managed the closing stages by bringing on Mason Mount and Ayden Heaven, ensuring United neutralised any late threats. Despite City holding 68% possession, they failed to register a single shot on target, highlighting the effectiveness of United’s defensive organisation.

The victory moves Manchester United into the top four and sends a strong early message under their interim manager.
